BIOGRAPHY

Barbara van der Vossen is a licensed professional counselor and licensed professional art therapist providing traditional and art therapy at Terra Counseling & Consulting.  She offers person-centered, trauma-informed art therapy and traditional talk therapy to individuals and families at Terra Counseling and Consulting. At the core of change lies the courage to imagine different possibilities, outcomes, and pathways forward. With empathy, compassion, and a straightforward approach, Barbara guides people through the healing capacity of their own creative process, helping them to better understand their experiences and find coping skills for an improved quality of life.

Creative self-expression centers people in their own story, but from a different vantage point that can yield new insights. Art makes the invisible visible, and it communicates when words are insufficient, uncomfortable, or unsafe. Barbara’s multi-faceted experience lends her an adaptive approach in supporting people’s individual goals in a supportive, non-judgmental manner. Sometimes that involves art-making, sometimes that involves conversation, and often a combination of the two.

A long-time writer and artist, Barbara understands the transformative power of creative expression firsthand. She is passionate about exploring neuroscientific reasoning behind the human urge to create, and how that urge relates to the infinite potential for personal growth. Art talent or experience is not necessary to benefit from art therapy.

Barbara holds a Master of Arts in Art Therapy from The George Washington University and a Bachelor of Arts in English and Fine Arts from The University of Maryland Global Campus. In addition to working with individuals and families in clinical settings, she also enjoys serving as adjunct faculty for graduate art therapy programs at Notre Dame of Maryland University and The George Washington University.
